I followed the plan by breaking it first

I couldn’t fall asleep two nights ago. So I decided to wash the dishes while listening to music. The music carried me away, so I ended up enjoying it for another two hours after I had finished with the dishes. A glass of good wine helped set the mood perfectly. I only went to bed around 3 am, yet I was determined to wake up at 6 and finally follow my schedule.

Surprisingly, I did wake up at 6 am. Lack of sleep was showing, but I felt pretty energized. It was the first day of the last month that I could stick to the schedule, at last. The irony of this situation is that I enabled myself to follow the plan by actually breaking it first. But violating it big time. Does it mean you need to break promises to yourself (read “plans”) to keep it later?

I don’t think that logic worked in my case. Those three hours of listening to music at night, when nobody was distracting me, helped to recharge. The main reason I hadn’t been able to follow the schedule was low energy. I don’t have time during the day to restore myself, and that night was the time that my body and mind needed so much.

Even though I skipped so many hours of sleep, I let myself relax and recharge. But it only worked once, you can never replace sleep with anything else in the long run. What I learned from this is that I need to build enough time for recharging in my schedule. Until then, the whole thing just won’t work. So that’s my plan for this week.

How do you keep your energy up? I’d love to hear what works for you—drop it in the comments.
